Israel used to focus on pushing the Palestinians out of the way. That battle they seem to have won, though at great cost on a range of levels, not the least moral. Then they shifted focus to Lebanon and Syria (i.e., actual, if tiny, countries), a battle that they are losing control over. Nevertheless, now their focus is on a vastly larger and more distant adversary, which is proving rather more than they can handle.
Whether you are "pro-Israel" or "anti-Israel," Likudnik imperialist, Jewish fundamentalist, or secular democrat, the fact is that the trend in Israeli interaction with its neighbors looks like a losing game from the perspective of Israeli national security. Israel's strategic situation is becoming steadily more complex and dangerous. And all this is happening because Washington has encouraged Tel Aviv's addiction to force by indulging in their habit and doing nothing to offer them alternative paths to security.
That is not my idea of friendship.
