As a somewhat related comment, the following is a video of an anti-regime demonstration a few weeks ago in Halfaya in Hama province in Syria. The thing to notice is that the women are segregated from the men: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzydLVMhZNk . Speaking in general about anti-regime protests in Syria, the women are far, far less numerous than the men, and are usually segregated from the men, and are often simply absent. Meanwhile at pro-regime demonstrations the women are a large minority (about one third) and are for the most part intermixed with the men. I've seen exceptions to those generalities, but that's the general picture.
