"...Steve Cook, and Egypt expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the army's passive behavior amid the thuggery Wednesday suggested complicity and a pretext for the regime to intervene to restore order and hold on to power. "It's clear that Mubarak, [Vice President Omar] Suleiman and the senior command are still in charge," Cook said by e-mail. "This may provide a pretext for the army to intervene, restore order, and reconstitute the political order."
It was massive unrest that ultimately led to the Free Officers' coup in 1952, he noted, saying people were relieved when order was restored.
