"Obama steps up criticism of Mubarak's regime ..."

"We urge the Egyptian authorities to allow peaceful protests and to reverse the unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications," Clinton continued. "These protests underscore that there are deep grievances within Egyptian society and the Egyptian government needs to understand that violence will not make those grievances go away."
"We will be reviewing our assistance posture based on events that take place in coming days," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said at a delayed press briefing Friday. Obama has not spoken with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Gibbs added...."

This reads to me that Washington is washing its hands of Mubarak. If he survives, they can rebuild bridges with cash, if he doesn't then they can claim they broke with him before it was obvious that he might fall. What comes after? I suspect that Washington is hoping that the military will run things for a while.

Then you have Michael Rubin. Always good for a laugh.
