The shifting sands ... In the Middle East

Very interesting piece. However a lot of it seems like a depressing read.

Basically Crooke makes a good case that peace is Israel/Palestine is dead and there is little anyone Israeli/Palestinian/European or even American can do about it. With peace dead seems like there is only the option of continual conflict in that area.

On the Economic front it is also not good. 40% of Egyptians living in poverty at a time when the Demographics are pointing towards a boom in the young population do show similarities to the conditions in Europe before WW1.

On the political front he explains the commonly called "Resistance Axis" in a pretty detailed way. The rise of Turkey-Iran-Syria-Hezbollah-Hamas after the Iraq war. Their Economic consolidation around the Nabucco pipeline and lifting of visa restrictions and growing political weight. This is the only positive part in the paper since the success of these powers is the only chance the region has of collapsing into WW1 style conflict.

Great essay.
