"... June 26th-27th G-20 Summit in Toronto. This event is also likely to witness a fresh round of US-China tension on the question of the value of the Yuan. While earlier this year, Treasury Secretary Geithner deferred a decision on whether to designate China as a “currency manipulator,” Congressional dissatisfaction following the May 25th-26th US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue has given new priority to this issue. The Treasury has welcomed new Chinese proposals on the Yuan, but Congress may be harder to assuage. Meanwhile, on Afghanistan concerns on the viability of US counter-insurgency policy, to which we have referred, continue to deepen. US military commanders in Afghanistan have come under sharp questioning about prospects for the upcoming Kandahar campaign. Behind-the-scenes, relations with President Karzai are marked by deepening distrust. Afghanistan will be a key issue for Russian President Medvedev’s visit to Washington on June 25th, as will be the unrest in Kyrgyzstan where both the US and Russia have a joint interest in restoring stability."
