Marwan Hamadeh: From “the Ba’ath, Party of Liberalism, Liberation, Change & Modernization” ... to the “Decaying Regime and the Failed Party”

'Hamadeh 'loyalties' are not hard to figure out'

In the October issue (87) of "The Monthly", published by 'Information International:
"M
inister and MP Marwan Hamadeh’s stances on Syria radically changed months after a failed assassination attempt against him on October 1, 2004. He went from lauding Syria as a “pioneering and developed regime, a friendly state, a leading party and a party of change and modernization” to vilifying it as a “decaying regime and a failed party.”

The "before":

“The anniversary of the glorious correctional movement formed a major turning point in the history of Syria both as a people and as a country. We grandly salute and praise your hard struggle that has changed Syria into a citadel of steadfastness and a symbol of Arab struggle in the face of conspiracies being planned against resoluteness and Arab dignity. Mr. President, we are confident that you wrote and are still writing the lines of the epic of Arab dignity and right. You were not satisfied with the October decision, but you also took the greater, braver and historic decision to pay with your souls and blood the price of saving Lebanon from its ordeal, unfettered by the threats and dangers and led by what your national and human conscience dictated and dictates and by your historic vision to save your Lebanese people and achieve cohesion between a single people living in two states. This cohesion will continue as long as we continue and our children after us and theirs after them”.

A telegram to President Hafez al-Assad on the anniversary of the correctional movement, An-Nahar 15-11-1997

“The Ba’ath Party lives in the Arab conscience and in the world’s dictionaries… The experience with the Ba’ath turned with Assad’s Syria into a journey in the world of dignity and strength… To speak about the Ba’ath is to speak of the symbol of modern nationalist and Arab action. It is the party of headship and leadership, the party of socialism and equality, the party of change and modernization, the party of continuous confrontation to the enemies of our Arab nation and to the Zionist agenda. It is the main arm for every nationalist and unitary movement”.

A speech at an event in Tripoli to celebrate the anniversary of the Ba’ath establishment,  An-Nahar 13-4-1999

“We are with you, with the heroic resistance, with all of Lebanon and with Assad’s Syria in the battle of liberation to restore the south, the Western Beqa’a, the Golan and all Arab land and rights through the single path between Beirut and Damascus which alone is able  to enforce a just and comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict”.

An address to Parliament on 12-7-1999

“President Assad is an unrivaled leader in whom the qualities of leadership, heroism, courage and wisdom were combined. With his death, Lebanon lost the older brother who had always looked after its unity, independence and civil peace”.

An-Nahar 11-6-2000

The "After":

“Look at the agents of the fraudulent and criminal bankruptcy which led us to this governance and this authority. I apologize! They are the authority thatemerged from Anjar’s decrees which were tainted with the seal of intelligence services”.

An address to Parliament in 2005

“We will immediately ask for an international tribunal to investigate the growing

criminality of the Syrian regime in Lebanon”.

A statement on 12-12-2005 following the assassination of MP Gebran Tueni

“These do not affect us. If booby-trapped cars did not affect us, will a decree issued by a decaying regime affect us?”

A radio interview on 9-4-200

“This regime is one that is totalitarian and is despised even by its own people and it is the one that targeted me. I care to see Olmert on the dock not Assef Shawkat and Bashar al-Assad”.

A statement on 8-10-2007

“Any effort exerted with Syria aims to lift its hands off Lebanon. And what is happening now is a bid and pressure on Syria to make it stop its interference in the presidential election that aim to disable it… Things have changed, the region has changed and the world has changed. And this is what Bashar al- Assad failed to notice, unlike his father Hafez al-Assad’s tendency to see the facts of the regional and international surrounding despite their mutual dictatorial tendency”. An interview with Asharq radio station on 27-10-2007  “… As for Lebanon’s future, we will not leave it in reliance either on wilayat al-faqih or the Ba’ath’s dictatorship”.

A statement in reaction to a speech by Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, An-Nahar 13-11-2007

“… This is the Syrian’s problem and all that we ask is that he gets off our backs… Lebanon is no longer his playing card and this is what Bashar al- Assad failed to see. Lebanon may have been in his grip for two decades but Lebanon is no longer in the Syrian grip… The return of the Syrian dominance to Lebanon will not be allowed no matter what it takes”.

An interview with Al-Shira’a magazine on 17-11-2007

“He who is dying to stop the international tribunal and who utilizes his victory on Israel – not to score a point in the Arab-Israeli conflict – is proof he is involved in the crimes or is covering them up… I do not exonerate Hizbullah from executing the Syrian decision in the attempted assassination against me”.  An interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station on 24-2-2008

“The launching of the international tribunal on March 1 forms the coronation of a years-long battle. And this proves that there has been no deal or settlement over the tribunal and that the Syrian regime is behind those assassinations”.

A statement on 2-3-2009
