What’s Going On at the U.S. Embassy in Syria?

Our friend Josh Hersh comments in the Faster Times, here

"It seemed notable, the observer said, to see so many senior positions go unfilled, or temporarily filled, particularly at a moment when the White House is talking about upping its diplomatic presence in Syria. If the new Ambassador were appointed today, what sort of Embassy would he or she find?.....

....An official at the Embassy told me today that while the situation does “look funny,” the changes are just “part of routine summer transfer.” (When I emailed the Public Affairs Officer listed on the Embassy’s website, I got her out of office reply: she left the position last week. Her replacement has been with the Embassy for two years.) The official went on, “The important point is that the Obama Administration announced its intention to return an Ambassador.”

Meanwhile, Maura Connelly, the former charge d’affairs, is not out of the game entirely. She is still working on Syria policy from Washington, D.C., as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, under Jeffrey Feltman."
