Iran and the West// Iran and its Neighborhood: Syria and Lebanon

(Thanks LKR)

Security for a New Century 110th Congress

Iran and the West

When: Friday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: U.S. Capitol Building, Room SC-4

Ambassador John W. Limbert (ret.), distinguished professor of international affairs at the U.S. Naval Academy, will join us for a discussion on the history and context of the relationship between Iran and the West. Iran has a complex history with the West derived in part from its Persian heritage, its role as a regional power and its perceived weakness in the face of Western ambitions and intervention. U.S. relations with Iran have been dominated by the legacy of the Islamic revolution, U.S. support for the Shah, and the U.S. hostage crisis. How do historic grievances influence the dynamic political relationship today? Does Iran's history affect Iranian attitudes towards the international community? How do Iranians perceive their role in Iraq and across the Gulf?

"Security for a New Century" is a bipartisan study group for Congress. We meet regularly with U.S. and international policy professionals to discuss the post-Cold War and post-9/11 security environment. This briefing is part of the US and Iran series in partnership with the US Institute of Peace. All discussions are off-the-record. It is not an advocacy venue.
